Design a Better Security Lighting System

It seems that the common method of planning a Raleigh security lighting system for most new homes involves the installation of a front and rear porch light. These lights are controlled by a switch just inside the front and back door and unless they are left on all night contribute absolutely nothing to the security of your home. Even if they are left on, they are of little deterrence since by the time they bring notice to an intruder, the intruder is already at your front door and just moments from entering your home.

If your intent is to provide security for your Raleigh property through the use of lighting, you must think further from the house than the front door. Your goal should be to deter the intruder from entering your property by stopping him long before he reaches your front or back door. In order to accomplish this objective, your security lighting should begin on the perimeter of your property, continue throughout the property and end at your front door.

Now, do not take this to mean that you must install lights all around your property. A few lights placed on or near the house that are operated by motion sensors will go a long way toward helping to provide you with safety and security on your property.

The mistake people make with outdoor security lighting that depends on motion sensors to detect an intruder is they will mount lighting fixtures with motion sensors built in. The fixture is then mounted on the side of the house and again the intruder is at your front door before being detected. As I stated earlier, we want to prevent the intruder from entering the property. In order to do so, we want the actual motion sensors installed near the perimeter of our property, as well as throughout other areas. With the lights mounted on or near the house and the motion sensors near the perimeter, when the lights are activated, this gives the illusion that someone inside the home has detected the presence of the intruder hopefully scaring them away.

When planning your security lighting system, also consider installing panic switches in a couple of locations inside your home. This gives the added advantage of being able to activate the outdoor lighting in the event you hear an unusual noise outside. Even though the chances of someone eluding well placed motion detectors throughout your property is unlikely, the panic switches will provide you and other family members some added peace of mind. Keeping these few key points in mind when designing an outdoor security lighting plan for your property will provide benefits for you and your family for many years to come.
